Several different kinds of metal detectors exist, I will explain how they work while trying not to get too technical. There are three major classes of metal detectors available.

The first type of metal detector is the PI, which stands for Pulse Induction. Pulse induction means that you are creating an electromagnetic pulse that exits the coil, bounces off a target, then returns to the coil giving a report on the target it hit.

Pulse induction detectors are usually more sensitive to smaller and deeper targets. The down side is they also pick up more trash targets and have a difficult time telling good targets apart from bad targets.

Another detector type is the VLF, which stands for Very Low Frequency. This kind of detector is versatile and commonly used. It uses phase demodulation to discriminate between types of metallic objects like iron and gold. It does a good job at telling the difference between good objects, like gold and treasure, and trash such as nails, bottle caps etc.

Yet another is the BFO, or Beat Frequency Oscillator. The beat frequency oscillator is a low cost circuit design. It has two coils, one at the end of the arm of the detector and one in the control box on the handle. These coils form a pair of tuned oscillators. The oscillators are tuned so that the difference in their frequencies is an exact multiple of each other. The presence of any metallic object will produce a change in either oscillator and thus produce an audible beat frequency harmonic tone.

Each of these technologies has trade-offs, usually between cost and their ability to sense small valuable objects. Newer advances are coming every day. Most of these are in the area of using special digital signal processing of the return signal. Every conductive object has a peculiar signature spectrum that tells a bit more about the object and can also be filtered out to separate junk (iron & aluminum) from Gold Treasure. As technologies advance the price for more capable equipment drops. This in turn opens new depths and more trashy areas to be hunted for treasure.

I have so many things I want to write about. I have learned so many things over the last few years that have changed my life and how I view life. I have many articles bursting inside to get out. But I will start with the most important thing. The one that made the biggest difference these last few years.

Read that title again. “We become what we think about most of the time.” Think about that some more. It is a sentence that has been said so many different ways throughout history.

Proverbs 23:7 states, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”

René Descartes said in Latin: “Cogito Ergo Sum.” Which translated means: “I think, therefore I am.”

Buddha said “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Life consists in what a man is thinking of all day.”

And of course, Earl Nightingale made famous the title of this post in his well known audio programs The Strangest Secret and Lead The Field. These were very good audio programs that made a difference in my thinking. I remember the first time I heard of Earl Nightingale. My father ordered his Lead The Field series on tapes. I listened to a few of them and thought they sounded interesting. So I made a copy of them to listen to later when I had more time. I knew that my father would misplace them somewhere or lose a couple of the tapes. So I copied them… and then stored them away in the back of a drawer… to be forgotten… not listened to… just as useful as my father’s originals.

Don’t get me wrong… I did see them from time to time as I was looking for other things. But not having the time or the desire, they were pushed aside again. Oh, if only I had listened to them all at that time and many times since. But the ignorance and impatience of youth… Too many other things to do and listen to. How naive.

Of course, every time I moved after I started my life on my own I packed these tapes in a box. And then unpacked them again after the move. But I was so busy with work and school and family and friends, it never occurred to me to actually take them out and listen to them now as an adult.

It wasn’t until I started to research opportunities for a home based business that I finally listened to them. But not right away. First I started reading the Rich Dad series of books. They inspired me to find a way out of the rat race. I could not depend on a “safe”, “secure” job anymore. Companies were down-sizing or “right-sizing” as some called it. I had been caught in that trap before. But luckily I was still young and had not left home yet. Now, things were different. I was out on my own, and the stakes were higher. The last thing I wanted was to run back home and live in my parent’s basement.

Having read Rich Dad, Poor Dad, I became a voracious reader of more things. Anything business related and anything self-improvement related. I even signed onto Rich Dad’s website. And then from that I received a flier in the mail for an audio of Rich Dad Secrets. Now that I had to have. It was from a copy called Nightingale-Conant. Wait a minute! I remember that name from somewhere. And I remembered the copy of Lead The Field that I had from so many years ago. But I still didn’t listen to that… not yet. I had to listen to Rich Dad Secrets first. But I enjoyed every minute of that. I listened at home. I listened at work. I even listened in the car. And a hunger was awoken in me that could only be filled by these CDs. No longer did I listen to music in the car. No longer did I listen to talk radio in the car. I had arrived at what I heard later described as automobile university. And that has made all the difference.

Having finished Rich Dad Secrets, I needed something else to listen to. I remembered the tapes and began to listen to them. Luckily I had a tape player in the car along with the CD player. But I knew I would need something else to listen to after that. So back to Nightingale-Conant I went. And they had a sale on many of their classic audio programs. The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale, Lead The Field by Earl Nightingale, The Psychology of Achievement by Brian Tracy, The Psychology Of Winning by Dennis Waitley, The Science Of Personal Achievement by Napoleon Hill, all classics and all on sale for a special price. I had to have them. So I ordered them all and I feasted on them… over and over again. Even now a few years later I listen again and always find new gems amongst their wisdom.

But the prevailing theme, when listening to these classics and the many more I have purchased since then has always been controlling our thoughts, because it is our thoughts that make us who and what we are. Controlling what we feed our mind… controlling our attitudes… controlling who we hang out with… controlling our thoughts and how we viewed our word around us. This was food for thought. And I took it to heart. And as I began to control these things and change my thinking, my life began to change. Both at work and at home.

I had become negative due to the down-sizing of the company I worked for. Even though I was fortunate to keep my job, it still took it’s toll on me. Add a couple unwarranted across-the-board pay cuts (for the good of the company), and my motivation was just about dead. But with the new found life that I had found by reading and listening to “vitamin” enriched books and CDs… positive energy in such a negative world… things began to turn around. In spite of the lower pay and the lower morale, I decided to make the best of it. I would become the change I wanted to see in the corporate world around me.

I changed my attitude. As my attitude changed, I became more valuable to my company. As I became more valuable, my pay began to increase in this tough environment where there was no money for raises. But my bosses found a way. From my new found reading and listening, my leadership skills began to develop. I became first a technical lead in my group that everyone came to for help and advise, and then, eventually, I became primary lead over the group.

Many more things have happened because of these changes but this is getting long enough for today. I will no doubt provide more examples in later articles. But for now, hopefully this can inspire people that they can change things. We may not be able to change our environment directly. But we can change our attitude toward the environment. Jack Canfield (another good author I have read) explains it like this. E + R = O or Event + Response = Outcome. Although we might not be able to change our environment, if we change our response to the event the outcome will still change.

I changed my response to the negatives in my life and the outcome began to change. I started all this by changing my thoughts.

Read that title again. See if there is some grain of truth in that for your life too.

Life that title and I guarantee that things will be different for you too.

The best way to prevent premature ejaculation is through certain exercises where you can essentially teach your body to last longer. This exchange of pawns violates the opening principles of chess in several ways and is not recommended. First it allows the Black Queen to become more mobile. Secondly because Black Bishop on c5 prevents him from castling, White cannot make use of the half open f file. White plans to play c3 and d4; however that means he will have to make an unusual amount of pawn moves. In the opening a player must concentrate on developing pieces, keeping pawn moves to a minimum. This game clearly illustrates the results of these flawed opening moves.

 4. ... dxe5 5. c3 Nc6 

If Black plays 5 … Bg4 pining the Knight in order to prevent pawn from moving to d4 White will play Qa4+ to remove the pin.

6. b4

White’s purpose in playing the move is unclear. It does not gain a pawn, since after b5, Na5; 8 Nxe5 Qh4+ Black wins the pawn back. Nor does it advance the development of pieces. The result of this move is to entangle the White’s pawns on b and c files in a weak position.

 6. ... Bb6 7. Bb5 Nf6 

Instead of defending his e5 pawn Black threatens White’s e4 pawn using his Knight. The position justifies this course of action because advantages of opening the e file will accrue only to him. Black can castle and make use of his Rook to take control of e file before White manages to secure the safety of his King. Normally e4 is supported by White’s queen-side Knight, but due the previous moves White no longer has that option.

8. Nxe5

Instead of capturing the e5 pawn, White would have done better to defend the e4 using Qe2 or d3, keeping the e file closed.

 8. ... O-O! 

This is the start of a superb attack. It doesn’t matter whether White chooses to exchange his Knight or his Bishop since this attack will overwhelm him in either case.

9. Nxc6

In case White played 9. Bxc6; moves bxc6; 10 Nxc6. Qe8 wins for Black. 10 d4 will result in loss because Black gains the two pawns after Nxe5; 11 O-O. Nxc3. The speed at which White’s weakness at d3 square is exploited is quite remarkable.

 9. Nxc6 bxc6 10. Bxc6 Nxe4!! 

White cannot capture Black’s Knight at e5 or Rook at a8. If he takes the Knight, Qh4+ will lead to a forced mate. If he takes the Rook, Black will follow up with Bf2+ and then either Bg4+ or Ba6+ depending on where the King moves, and White will lose the Queen.

 11. d4 Qf6! 12. Bxe4 Qh4+ 13. Kd2 Qxe4 14. Qf3 Qh4! 15. g3 

If White moves Qxa8 and captures the Rook, he will lose his Queen after Qf2+ and a discovered check from Black’s Bishop at c8.

 15. ... Qg5+ 16. Qe3 Qd5 17. Re1 Bg4 18. Kc2 a5 

The costs of premature advances are now clearly discernible.

 19. bxa5 Rxa5 20. Ba3 c5 

With his Rooks and Bishops operating freely along open files and diagonals, Black destroys White’s pawn structure.

As a coach, you should always be aware of what other teams, both within the organization and outside it, are doing. It seems that Belichick did not want team members looking forward and outside the organization - and he took the Giants lightly because of the wide popular opinion against them. It stands to reason, then, that an effective coach will not underestimate the competition’s preparation and determination - even if they seem to be losing.

Communication within teams is extremely important. Just as Coughlin created a communication strategy, Belichick could do the same thing in the next season. Each team member needs to know his or her role in the big picture, no matter how big or how small. When a coach takes the time to communicate this, either personally or through senior team members, the entire team takes on a new life of ownership and accountability.

A coach’s ego has no place in a team. Belichick has taken quite a bit of constant criticism on his abrupt style and egotistical manner. Improvement to this situation should take on a balance between ego and non-ego, so that the public persona is not seen as an overly egotistical and unflinching person. It’s easy to become proud of a team that consistently n the pride turns into outright egotism, it’s time to tone it down.performs - and as coaches we should certainly communicate our pride at all times. Not only does this give into the ego issue, it also shows an unwillingness to deal with a large issue at the time - and move on. Sometimes we may underestimate the impact of large problems on our teams, so coaches should move to deal with these problems right away - address them, answer questions about them, and even admit failure before the problems have an opportunity to fester.

Two of Belichick’s biggest issues can be detrimental to any coach and his or her outward perception. First, good coaches and leaders must have a total sense of self-awareness. In Belichick’s case, he may have self-awareness and just not care about the perception side of it. But what we have to remember as coaches, leaders, and managers is that perception is often a reality. With just a few seconds to go and a final play still to come, Belichick walked off the field at Superbowl XLII.

Even though he gave a half-hearted hug to Coughlin, his breach of sportsmanship definitely sounded a negative tone. Simple acts such as walking off the field can cause major problems for others’ perceptions of us, so always be aware of how you’re being perceived by your team - and its opposition. In fact, poor choices that affect perception can expose any of you or your teams’ weaknesses. Coaches should be keenly aware of how they are perceived.

The second big issue Belichick should deal with is a lesson for any coach, manager, or leader. One leadership style does not fit all. In fact, “bad” leaders are seen as people who consistently stick to one style, be it authoritarian, democratic, or laissez-faire. What Belichick can do, and what all coaches and leaders should learn, is to modify style based on the situation. A coach can do this through careful analysis and evaluation of both the problem and the team members who are involved. If the situation deals with a team member who has been known as a wild card, like Randy Moss, a coach or leader can react in an authoritarian fashion. On the other hand, if team members have a level of maturity, the coach or leader can allow some leeway by taking a more participative stance.

Remember to be aware of the opposition, communicate and acknowledge each team member’s role, leave your ego behind, address big problems right away, be aware of perception, and practice a situational coaching style. When you do, you’ll find that a high performing team can transform into a winning team - and stay that way.

Next, pinch the fan together at the bottom edge. Gently open the top of the fan to form a half circle shape. Use the clothes pin to keep the bottom edge pinch together while you work the glue gun.

On the back of your Kentucky Derby fan, carefully place the tip of the craft glue between each fold and apply a small dab of glue to secure in place. Let the glue dry thoroughly.

Once the glue has dried, you should be able to remove the cloths pin to find that the fan stays in place. This is the fun part of the craft project. Your Kentucky Derby guests can use the craft glue to attach a cluster of silk flowers to their fans or a lace embellishment running along the tops or bottom sides. The pinched end of the fan makes a great handle to hold the elaborate fans once the guests have completed them.
